John Bitterman

John Bitterman, Baritone

Baritone John Bitterman, founder and artistic director of Silver Swan, has enjoyed a varied career as a soloist, chorister, instrumentalist and composer. He sang for seven seasons in the Rose Ensemble, and travelled with them to Spain, France, Germany and Italy. He has sung opera and oratorio around the country, and was a soloist with the Oregon Bach Festival.

Attuned to music from the medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and modern eras, John especially delights in bringing them all to new audiences. Constructing a sampler of fine music from many eras into one program presents, he believes, an opportunity for people to see all music in a new light, and to find beauty in unexpected places.

John’s composition “Christ the Apple-tree” was recorded by the Rose Ensemble, who gave its premier at the Basilica of St. Mary.  He composes mainly vocal music, including music for solo voice. He also greatly enjoys arranging music for Silver Swan.

John is originally from Philadelphia, and lived in New York City for a dozen years. Currently, he also teaches taijiquan in the Twin Cities, and in his spare time, he enjoys dealing with all the interesting features of his prairie bungalow in Minneapolis.
